Work shadowing CASAP, Spain

The CASAP Primary Care Centre serves more than 70,000 residents of Casteldefels and neighbouring towns. It is situated 20 minutes south of Barcelona and close to the airport. The Centre offers a Primary Care Experience Programme, which is an academic and practical training aimed at health care professionals who want to learn about new services focused on innovation towards better outcomes.

A visit to CASAP

Over a 5- or 10-day visit, four participants on the CfCC or PORT programme can discover how primary health care services are organised and managed in a primary care centre focusing on chronic care management. Participants can shadow the activity led by primary care nurses. The program is flexible and can be adjusted as needed. Applicants should specify in their application whether they are interested in the 5-day or 10-day programme.

Content sessions will cover a wide range of topics in a workshop format, where participants can learn from front line managers and health care professionals. These sessions will maximise interaction and participation. Potential topics for content sessions could include Catalan and Spanish health systems, primary health care organisation through interdisciplinary teams, professional role development, or care of complex chronically ill patients by nurses, social workers, doctors (heart failure, COPD, diabetes). Observation sessions will cover different primary care services throughout health professional shadowing in real settings (family doctor, nurse leading complex chronically ill patients etc.).
